2668

Technology has evolved and advanced into what one could never had imagined. Just like the computer and the smart phone, one form of technology has becomes the latest trend. It is slowly but steadily earning its place in the world of technology and in the acceptance of people. This form of technology is the wearable technology. Wearable technology in the form of smart shirts, wrist bands and even clips to name a few have become the trending topic in today’s discussions.

Initially, wearable technology was developed for the benefit of individuals who liked to make a follow up on their fitness. This were especially athletes and sports players. With time, the technology was adopted into other areas of life, with the health sector being next in line. The development of health tracking wearable technology has made great strides in the health care sector enabling individuals to attain and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

In recent times, wearable technologies have become an integral part of the health care system. The successes of these health trackers was the center of discussion during the 5th edition of the MEDICA fair. The MEDICA fair is an event meant for the health care system as well as other industries with an interest in the health care system. This year’s edition was held in Dusseldorf between the 12th and the 15thof November. The event was graced with the attendance of over 130,000 visitors. The exhibitors in this year’s edition were from 100 countries and summed up to a total of 4,800 exhibitors.

The 4,800 exhibitors were from different sectors of the health care industry. An astounding exhibition of wearable tech took place at the wearable technology pavilion where 23 exhibitors had a chance to showcase their goodies. Since the beginning of the MEDICA fair, there have been well over 10,000 exhibitors. These new additions were just but a tip of the ice berg. Some of these exhibitors included:

  • Imprint Energy from the USA
  • VARTA Microbattery, Germany
  • Shimmer from Ireland
  • ActiveIsights from the UK
  • Biovotion from Switzerland
  • Rooti Labs from Taiwan

  • Viatek Prizm Medical from the USA
  • American Megatrends from India
  • TMG – BMC from Slovenia
  • Body Tel from Germany
  • Lucimed from Belgium
  • Exel from Italy
  • Clothing+ from Italy

These are just but a few of the brilliant minds that made their way to this year’s MEDICA fair. They represented the 13 countries that exhibited in the wearable technology pavilion this year.

The 12th of November was the D-Day for this fair as this was the day it commenced. The halls of the venue on that Wednesday were the place to be for any technology lover. Those who were particularly interested in the development of wearable technologies would be all assembled in hall number 15.

That morning in Dusseldorf was filled with frenzy, people moving from here to there and vice versa. All the fuss was about exchanging ideas. There were discussions based on the breakthrough some technologies had. In addition to this, there were also questions on the future of wearable technology and the health care sector. With all the advancement in technology, you would easily understand what all the frenzy was about.

Just next to the wearable technology pavilion were more discussions on the technology and health care. In this booth, the conversations were specifically centered on wearable technology and their possibilities to effect change in the health care system. The MEDICA fair attracted a relatively large number of wearable technology developers who exhibited what they had in mind.

The MEDICA fair is not only about health care. As stated above, it also includes other players in this sector. Keeping fit is an important aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Thus, sports becomes an important player in the health sector. The fair attracted a large number of sports gurus whose specialty was either in performance of players or/and in the collection, monitoring and analysis of important data related to the wearer of wearable technology. The sports gurus who managed to make it to the fair had an interesting time trying to explain to visitors about the new and advanced methods that are in place to assist in performance diagnosis. They also gave more insight on the steps being taken in the sports medicine sector. Some of the famous sports gurus who managed to grace the event included the German’s national football team physician, Prof. Dr. Tim Meyer and Prof. Jonathan Clark who happens to be the medical director of the Red Bull Stratos project.

The wearable technology pavilion was not only with tech enthusiasts and developers, it also attracted a large number of media representatives who were eager to cover this story. We are all looking forward to the next MEDICA fair taking place on the 16th to the 19th of November 2015.
